
Afghanistan
Afghanistan’s area of 264,000 square miles (683,760 square kilometres). It is approximately the size of the Texas. Much of the country is covered by the mountain ranges of the Hindu Kush, which rises to heights of 24,000 feet (7,300 meters) in the east. In addition, there are extensive deserts and plains.
The country is landlocked. To the north lie the Central Asian republics that once belonged to the Soviet Union-Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan. Part of the boundary with these republics, about 700 miles (1,126 kilometres) long is formed by the Oxus river, which the Afghanistan people calls Daryaiamu. To the east and southeast, separated by the Durand line, lies Pakistan. To the west lies Iran, while the Chinese province of Sin kiang borders the Wakhan Mountains in the northeast.
